A stretch for aches while breastfeeding

Illustration of a seated side stretch: one leg folded, the other straight, one hand on the foot while leaning sideways

Sitting for long stretches to breastfeed or pump is one of the most common causes of back, neck and shoulder aches for new mothers. Here is a stretch you can do during the day.

Side stretch

  1. Sit with one leg folded and the other stretched out straight, holding that foot with your hand.
  2. Raise your other arm and lean sideways as far as is comfortable until you feel a stretch along your side. Hold for a count of 10.

Repeat 10 times a day on each side.

Stop and see a doctor if the stretch makes the pain worse or causes numbness or pain that spreads.
